# Create a routine

> Ask Balt for a routine or start from a use case, then choose what sets it off.

Ask Balt, in the console or in your chat app: "Sum up my meetings every morning." Balt writes the routine, shows you what it will do and waits for your confirmation.

You can also start from a card in the **Discovery** tab. Click **Ask Balt**: Balt shows you a preview built from your data, then makes it your routine. To offer yours to your colleagues, see [Share a routine](https://docs.hire-balt.com/en/routines/share.md).

## What sets it off

| Trigger | Example |
| - | - |
| A schedule | Mondays at 9:00, weekdays at 8:30, every 4 hours |
| A finished meeting | When a meeting's transcript is ready |
| A message | When someone writes a given phrase |
| An integration | When a connected tool reports an event, like an email received or a record changed |
| A colleague | When all the colleagues it collects from have answered |

For a routine that follows a tool's records, like a CRM, **Records it follows** picks **My records** (the ones you're responsible for) or **All records** (every one you can see). A routine set off by an integration needs the tool connected: see [Connect a tool](https://docs.hire-balt.com/en/integrations/connect.md). For a routine that gathers colleagues' answers, see [Collect answers from the team](https://docs.hire-balt.com/en/routines/collect.md).

## How it runs

Balt picks a routine's mode when he writes it. The mode decides what a run costs. Hover the icon next to the next run to see a routine's mode.

| Mode | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Code only** | A script does the work. Balt isn't involved, so a run costs only the script. |
| **Code, then Balt** | A script checks first. Balt runs only when there's something to do. |
| **Balt each time** | Balt does the work himself on every run. |
